GIGABYTE launches BRIX Extreme: equipped with AMD Ryzen 5000U series APU

Gigabyte has just announced the launch of BRIX Extreme, which is the first BRIX device with AMD Ryzen 5000U series APU. BRIX Extreme has three options: R3-5300U (4 cores), R5-5500U (6 cores) and R7-5700U (8 cores), with a TDP of 15W. Unfortunately, these are based on Zen 2, not Zen 3.

This is also the first device we have seen to use the new AMD RZ608 WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 module, which was announced not long ago. Other features include 2.5Gbps Ethernet, an M.2 PCIe 3.0 NVMe slot for solid state drives, two HDMI 2.0a ports, a mini DP port and a USB-C port with DP Alt mode, all supporting DP 1.4, all Display outputs can use four 4K displays at the same time.

Gigabyte will provide the BRIX Extreme low-profile chassis and a slightly larger chassis that can accommodate a 2.5-inch SATA drive or an optional expansion module. Expansion modules can add a pair of M.2 NVMe slots, although they will be limited to PCIe 3.0 x1 or SATA, or there is a module with a single M.2 NVMe slot, with the same restrictions, plus an additional Ethernet interface, and an RS-232 interface through the RJ45 port.

Gigabyte bundled a VESA mounting bracket and a 135-watt power adapter. Unfortunately, no pricing is currently available, but I was told that its price is competitive compared to other similar products on the market. It is expected that there will be retail supply in early 2022.
