TI AM3359 BeagleBone open source development and evaluation solution

AM3359 BeagleBone open source development board adopts TI’s low-cost ARM Cortex-A8-based 500MHz-720MHz processor AM3359, used for engineering development, demonstration or evaluation of the processor, mainly used in game peripherals, sales machines, home and industrial automation , weighing scales, consumer medical devices, smart toll systems and educational consoles, printers, and high-end toys. This article describes the AM335x main features, block diagram, and AM335x BeagleBone open source development board main features, block diagram, circuit diagram and bill of materials.

The AM335x microprocessors, based on the ARM Cortex-A8, are enhanced with image, graphics processing, peripherals and industrial interface options such as EtherCAT and PROFIBUS. The device supports the following high-level operating systems (HLOSs) that are available free of charge from TI:

• Linux®

• Windows® CE

• Android™

The AM335x microrocessor contains these subsystems:

• Microprocessor unit (MPU) subsystem based on the ARM Cortex-A8 microprocessor.

• POWERVR SGX™ Graphics Accelerator subsystem for 3D graphics acceleration to support Display and gaming effects.

• Programmable Real-Time Unit Subsystem (PRUSS) enables the user to create a variety of digital resources beyond native peripherals of the device. In addition, the PRUSS is separate from the ARM core. This allows independent operation and clocking to give the device greater flexibility in complex system solutions.

AM335x BeagleBone Open Source Development Board

The BeagleBone is the latest addition to the BeagleBoard.org family and like its’ predecessors, is designed to address the Open Source Community, early adopters, and anyone interested in a low cost ARM Cortex A8 based processor. It has been equipped with a minimum set of features to allow the user to experience the power of the processor and is not intended as a full development platform as many of the features and interfaces supplied by the processor are not accessible from the BeagleBone via onboard support of some interfaces.
